A large slip blocked State Highway 1 early yesterday morning seven miles south of Atiamuri. North-bound traffic was diverted via Rotorua along State Highway 5. Heavy rain caused big boulders, trees and pumice to tumble on to the road about 3.30 a.m. The Ministry of Transport closed the highway at 3.45 a.m. — and it remained closed until 6.30 a.m. By that time k Ministry of Works and Development emergency crew had cleared a one- way lane for traffic. Taupo's acting senior traffic officer, Mr D. Wilson, said the highway was expected to remain open to one- way traffic only until at least mid-day. The slip was finally cleared yesterday afternoon.
