2 Broadlands golfers the top qualifiers

It was "Broadlands day" at the Taupo Golf Club on Saturday when players from the district occupied the first two places among the 32 qualifiers for the captain's prize matchplay event. J. Stevens "distanced" , the rest of the field of 138 starters on the new course with a round of 81, 15 — 66 to finish four strokes in - front of the consistent L. O'Connor who finished in 70 nett to earn second place. Also round in 70 nett was the rapidly improving C. Broughton, who lost second place on the countback and gained a further handicap reduction from 17 to 15. Notable among a group of players on 71 nett was R. S. Wilson, J. Heaslip, A. Forster. 75 H. J. Gowling. Sixteen players finished on 75 and those eliminated by ballot were F. Tapalaga, D. Rankin, C. Jackson, G. Furlong, J. Marama, R. Strachan, E. Logan, R. Weir, S. Skiba, N.. Wootton, N. Hinckesman, G. Barlow, P. Thomas, H. Gillies and G. Wilson. G. Moss achieved a notable feat on Saturday with the first bird's nest win on the new course; he birdied the 6th and 18th holes and collected 50 balls. J. Stevens had a comfortable victory in the professional's stableford with 43 points, followed by R. Arneil, L. O'Connor 39, R. Williams, D. Logan, B. Gilbert and G. Corner 38. Twos were scored by P. Evans 3rd, R. Arneil, K. Sharrock 6th, J. Saunders and R. Weir 12th. * * * Sunday's aggregate stableford competition on the old course was won by T. Hansen and R. Darlington, 78 points. I. Thomas headed the professional's stableford event with 40 points, followed by Mrs F. Tapalaga, R. Bezitt; 39, K. Sutherland and T. Hansen 38. R. Daly struck unexpected "riches" with the only two of the day, at the 6th hole on the old course, for 12 balls. The bird's nest stands at 39 balls.
