Night classes changed as rolls drop
Evening classes at Tauponui-a-Tia College are continuing from courses offered last term — but some changes have been made because of falling rolls. A new class in floral art was opened this term and it proved so popular that several people were unable to enrol because places filled so quickly. Some people have already put their names on a waiting list to join the class next term. Typing and shorthand classes have been amalgamated because of lack of demand and the class is to be held on Monday. "Classes in woodwork and metalwork have attracted a steady demand and there are a few vacancies in both metalwork classes but woodwork is full," said Mr P. M.
Wilson, evening class supervisor. Several vacancies exist in art classes on Wednesday because many of the people who originally enrolled have left the district. "This is a common problem faced by evening classes, especially in a town with an itinera'nt population," he said. Beginners will find it difficult at this stage to join classes in Maori and maths but, Mr Wilson said, tutors are willing to consider people if they want to enrol. "The college is always willing to consider new classes if a proven demand exists and suitable tutors are available," said Mr Wilson. "However, we are bound by departmental requirements and cannot respond as we would wish to the community's requests."
