Plant work on time despite
shortages
Serious shortages of labour and materials are not expected to prevent work on Taupo's sewage treatment plant finishing on schedule. The plant's project manager, Mr Rolf Kern, said the job should be completed about the end of next month. And after testing equipment to ensure it meets
specifications, the plant will be connected to the town's reticulation scheme. The date for this is set at 'no later than August 31.' Mr Kern said the main supply problems involved the complex electrical control equipment. Some parts arrived six months later than expected, but were now installed. All mechanical equipment, apart from the
floating gas holding cover for the large sludge digester, is now in place. The digester is being assembled on the site and will be dropped in the tank this week. Mr Kern said he was more than happy with the plant's progress. "And if everything goes right all dates should be met with no problems at all." Work on beautifying the area is underway. Within three weeks, more than 16,000 feet of pipe will have been laid in Taupo's commercial area in readiness for the hookup to the treatment plant. Taupo's assistant engineer, Mr Peter Tew, said the contract for the next stage was let about three weeks ago to a Hamilton firm. This is the southern interceptor, which will run from Kaka Street to the Waipahihi School. The work is expected to take seven months. No starting date has been decided yet, said Mr Tew.
