More flats okayed for pensioners
The demand for pensioner housing in Taupo has prompted the Taupo Borough Council to establish two blocks of flats at the corner of Rifle Range Road and Konini Street. The original recommendation suggested only one block be built. The council now plans to build four single units and one double unit alongside the 15 existing flats on the site. At present 17 pensioners are on the waiting list for single flats. All have lodged their applications since April, 1971. Eleven of the elderly waiting for units live in the
Taupo borough, three in the county and the rest in other parts of New Zealand. Two couples are on the waiting list for double units — one from Taupo and the other from outside the area. The first application was lodged in 1971 and the later one in 1973. The first pensioner flats in Taupo were opened four
years ago. Since the newest block was opened in August last year the, borough council has been unable to satisfy any further applications. At the council meeting on Monday night councillors voted to "initiate such action as is. necessary to establish a further block of pensioner flats" on the same site as the others.
