MARAE MOVE APPROVED
The Taupo Borough Council has approved an application by the Nukuhau Marae Committee to re-establish general meeting rooms on the Rangatira A138 marae reserve. The application was made by Mr R. Rameka, chairman of the Nukuhau Marae Committee, to establish an accessory building on the marae reserve. Aerial photographs taken in 1939 show two buildings — the present carved meeting house and a larger building used as a dining room. This building was accidentally destroyed by fire in 1966. The committee has applied to re-establish this room. In 1968 the committee acquired a dismantled exMinistry of Works building to replace the dining room but it was never erected. Now, two ex-ministry geothermal cottages have been acquired and the committee is to establish
these buildings for meeting rooms and general use. Internal alterations are proposed and the buildings are to be strengthened to be used for assembly purposes. The committee has agreed to carry out the
necessary work to meet the council's requirements. These include the complete repainting of the exterior of the buildings and repairing damuged asbestos, wall shingles and window panes. New spouting, downpipes
and soakholes will also be installed. The council gave its approval providing alterations, repairs and improvements were carried out within six months under agreement and surety of $500.
