Two harriers in rep team
Taupo A grade harrier colts Gary Dryden and Mark Howell have been selected for the Waikato junior A team to compete against Auckland and Northland at Auckland on June 29. At the Tauwhare Cup cross-country recently Dryden finished fifth and Howell 10th in the colts' 6000-metre event. Some 300 harriers from Waikato and Bay of Plenty competed in appalling conditions in the annual cross-country races. The course was a real mess, with mud and surface water everywhere. Throughout the afternoon rain fell steadily and a strong wind blew. it was also very cold. There were 120 starters in the senior 9000-metre race. Trevor Sutherland and lan Walker, both of Tauranga, crossed the line locked together — a virtual dead-heat. Sutherland got the nod. John Sharp, of Taupo, running his best race for the season, was 27th. Other Taupo placings were: Bruce McGregor 42nd, Keith Scandlyn 45th, Noel Bennett 32nd. Timothy Marshall was
eighth and Allan Attwood 16th in a large B colts' field which ran over 3000 metres. Of all the Taupo girls competing, Glenys Dryden fared the best. She was fourth in her race — a creditable effort as she had no spiked shoes and was, therefore, at a great disadvantage. There will be a training pack run from Crown Park at 2 p.m. on Saturday.
