Greater than them all...
"The Lord on high is mightier far than the noise of great waters." Psalm 93 V.4, N.E.B. Charles Wesley wrote these words:
"Thy sovereign grace to all extends, Immense and unconfined; From age to age it never ends; It reaches all mankind." From the beginning the Bible teaches that God made the world, that it was not just an accidental happening but the result of the divine purpose. Whatever view we may hold about the mechanics of creation, and whatever we may believe about the adaptation in nature, this still holds true; behind all that is, and in control of all that is, stands the loving and intelligent being whom we call God. The psalmist reiterates this marvellous truth, and his song is, therefore, one of great and joyous confidence. Not that he is ignorant of the powers of evil, and their considerable strength. As he says, "the ocean lifts up its clamour. . . its pounding waves." But the Lord is mightier than all this. The high destiny God purposed for his creation at the beginning is still apparent, despite opposing forces, and shall continue to the triumphant end, until God's will is completely achieved. The secret bf our serenity is to believe and rest in this glorious fact. To commit ourselves utterly, and with complete confidence, to God whose high purpose cannot be defeated, is to be at peace. And this peace, which is inward, will continue despite all the evils that come against us from outside because, as the psalmist says, God is greater than them all.
