TAUPO LOSES TITLE

Taupo failed in its I bid to retain the Bay I of Plenty District Golf 1 Association's senior 1 pennant title, losing 1 by 7 1/2 matches toi 1 1/2 against Tauranga 1 in the final at the 1 Rotorua club's course I at Whakarewarewa on I Sunday. The team faced a formidable task against Tauranga, which included four players with Freyberg I Rosebowl experience — M. Nicholson and P. Wells, members of this year's Bay of Plenty side; N. Johnson, 1 1973 Bay of Plenty team; and K. Carter, past Wellington representative. The other members of the Tauranga team, H. Paine and J. Ward, were members of this year's Bay of Plenty Garrard Shield team of 12 players. The highest handicapped I player in the Tauranga team was on 3 and there were six club members on this handicap in contention for the last position. The Taupo team was changed from that which won the zone competition last month by the unavailability of W. Page, who is in hospital. Detailed results (Taupo names first). — Foursomes: P. Evans and Arneil lost to M. Nicholson and Carter, 4 and 3; G. and S. Wilson lost to P. Wells and Paine, 1 up; H. J. Gowling and G^ F. Barlow lost to Johnson and Ward, 2 up. Singles: Evans lost to Nicholson, 3 and 2; G. Wilson lost to Carter, 2 and 1; S. Wilson lost to Wells, 7 and 6; Barlow beat Ward, 5 and 4; Gowling lost to Johnson, 4 and 2; Arneil and Paine, all square. * * * Poor weather eonditions reduced field s to a low level for club events during the weekend at the Taupo links. Saturday's foursomes competition on the new course was won by R., Warren and J. Ballantyne, with a stableford score of 39 points. Twos were scored on the new course by the foursomes combinations of W. Henson-P. Thomas 6th, R. Daly-R. Rudkin and M. Pitiroi-G. Rameka 18th. On the ' old course R. T. Ward and R. Hall birdied the 16th. Sunday's four-ball bestball par event was won by M. Vanner and S. Skiba, 6 up. Dennis Rameka, 38 points, returned the only card in the professional's stableford competition. )
