New rig to aid deeper quest
for water
The level of Taupo's underground water tables is dropping — and one local drilling company has taken steps to meet the problem. Farm Services (Taupo) Ltd has imported a drilling rig from Australia which managing-director Mr John Sinclair says is one of the fastest water well rigs in the world. The unit — a Mayhew 1000 — can serid a bore down 2000 feet, he said. There is only one other similar rig in New Zealand.
Perhaps the cost — up to $50,000 — accounts for its rarity. Mr Sinclair said the rig, and its operator, Mr Brian Kidd, will be working mainly in the Taupo area, but will travel anywhere work demands. Although the company will be concentrating on water well and thermal drilling, Mr Sinclair said he has high hopes for some geothermal work on the Broadlands field. "The rig is suitable for this type of work," he said.
