Speed warning
The number of speeding offences is rising, says Taupo's Senior TrafBc Officer, Mr A. H. Hyde. Mr Hyde yesterday issued a warning to the limit-breakers. He said there would be "no way out" for those caught exceeding the temporary 50 m.p.h. limit. The Transport Department was also looking into the possibility of making the 50 m.p.h. signs a permanent fixture of the roads. A recent Ministry of Transport report showed
there had been a drastic reduction in the number of injury and non-injury accidents. Mr Hyde said no-one was yet sure whether this fact could be attributed to the reduced speed limit alone. The drop was also evident in the slower speed areas. Mr Hyde believes, however, that the lowering of the * maximum limit has contributed to the overall reduction in accidents. "We would like to think this was because of the 50 m.p.h. limit," he said.
