Timber for Japan
Almost half a million feet of timher has left Turangi this week, hound for Japan. It is the first major crop of export pine from the area. The trees are just over 30 years old. Logging contractors from Feilding, Mr M. Morrah and Mr G. Bell, have been clearing land on the lower slopes below the Turangi town reservoir, and the timber has been carted to ' Napier. The contractors said last week the trees were some of the finest pine they had cut. Small native trees and scrub have been left to regenerate and fill the area left by the pine. The land will eventually become part of the catch- " ment area for the Turangi water supply.
