Lake Aratiata fish deaths explained
Scientists believe weed control, lowering of the lake level and the lower outflow from Lake Taupo are to blame for the death of a number of small fish in Lake Aratiatia earlier this year. Mr W. J. Shanks, district manager, NZED, Hamilton, said a full scientific analysis had been made of samples of mud and water from the lake. "Copies of the report have been sent to the DSIR, the Department of Internal Affairs and the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries in Wellington,"
he said. "At the time when the fish were found dead I asked the Health Department to test the water to make sure our own men were not drinking poisoned water. "The analysis figures made of the water were within acceptable limits." The NZED has been plagued with weed problems at Lake Aratiatia for some time. "We must remember that Aratiatia is not stocked with trout as a fishing lake," said Mr Shanks. "And we haye to kill the weed or lose the station."
