Live detonators dumped at tip
About 50 detonators were found in a box at the Taupo rubbish dump on Sunday. They are now ' in the care of the Taupo police, who will probably take them to a local quarry for explosion. The police arms officer, Constable C. Birch, yesterday expressed con-
cern about the potential danger of leaving the detonators at the dump, where children could have handled them. "They can go off so easily, even just by being shaken," he said. A man who saw the half full box of detonators amongst some rubbish moved them to a safe place and telephoned the police.
Written on the box were instructions to handle with great care and a warning that to scratch or prick the detonators with a pin, knife or other hard surface could cause an explosion. Constable Birch said the detonators did not appear to have been dumped for long.
