276 ENTRIES FOR GOLF TOURNAMENT

The Schweppes amateur tournament, which attracts one of the biggest entries on the New Zealand golfing calendar, will be held at the Taupo Golf Club on Saturday and Sunday.

Entries this year total 276, with 1% men and &0 women drawn to play 18 holes each day. Because of the big entry, play will start at 6.30 a.m. with fours leaving at sixminute intervals The last four is scheduled to tee-off at 1 . 1 8 p .m Main events for both men and women are 36-hole gross and nett competitions, with prizes for winners and runners-up. Subsidiary events over 18 holes each day for men and women are gross, nett and stableford competitions. Winner and runner-up prizes will be awarded in the gross and nett events but the stablefords will be limited to a 'winner only" trophy. An additional award this year will be a cup donated by Schweppes for the best 36hole gross score returned by a man or woman competitor. An annual miniature will also be provided by the company. The new clubhouse building will be in use for the first

time at a Schweppes tournament. Playing conditions have benefitted from recent light rain and the greens, in particular, promise to run smoothly Players to watch in the women 's field include last year s gross winner, Miss S. Beadle (Wanganui), and Miss P . Dudding (T aupo ) Miss Beadle, who plays off scrfctch, is one of New Zealand's most promising golfers, and her play last year was most impressive. Miss Dudding, handicap two, has recently joined the Taupo club following her posting to a local school. Another up-and-coming young player, she is a Bay of Plenty representative, and has enjoyed considerable success at tournaments throughout the country. Other low-markers include Miss K. Wilkinson (Grange) 4 Mrs A. Mullany (Napier) 5, Mrs G. Levet (Manukau) 5, and Mrs P. Oates (Napier) 6. Three players handicapped on three are the low-markers of the men s field. They are W. Duff (Murupara), L. D. Schofield (Napier) and the youthful Shandon member, C. J. .Smale whose parents live in Taupo. Four handicappers include B.W. Hancox (Martinborough), S. J. Wilson (Waipukurau) A M. Borren (Te Marua) and W. Piper (Miramar). The five handicappers are headed by last year s gross winner, W. E. Page (Paraparaumu), and include G. F Barlow (Taupo) D. G Single (Whitford Park) and R. HayMackenzie (Te Aroha) Entrants on six are the youthful J. Mackenzie, of Napier, who scored the first hole-in-one at Taupo's new first earlier this month; B. Ogilvie, champion of the Peninsular (Auckland) club; , and M.J. Falloon (Masterton), an experienced representative player.
