TAUPO BEATEN BY NINE WICKETS
Taupo lost the toss and the game in its Attrill Cup cricket fixture against Tauranga at the Kaimanawa Reserve on Sunday. On a pitch affected by rain overnight and the previous day Taupo could only score 129 and, in far better conditions and with time to spare, Tauranga knocked off the tar- | get for the loss of one wicket. The result eliminated Taupo from trophy calculations and its remaining game, against Te Puke next month, will have no bearing on the fate of the cup. Former Northern Districts left arm medium-fast bowler Dave Andersen cut the top off the Taupo innings in his opening over. With his fifth ball he had John Darlington caught at the wicket, and skipper McPherson, trying to force an in swinger through mid-wicket, succeeded only in getting the ball to short mid-on where the catch was made. Terry Cullen and Dave Hunt took the total to 29 against tight and aggressive bowling on an unpredictable pitch. Cullen, who took numerous blows on the body, became Andersen 's third victim. Hunt and Warrick Davey added 38 for the fourth wicket until the unlucky Davey had a ball jump, take the top edge of his bat and balloon to leg slip John Williamson and Bill Gardner both looked in splendid form but both fell lbw after reaching double figures. Neville Cambie was nicely caught and Mike West was unnecessarily run out to make it 1 19 for eight. Jim Govind smote five runs before being given out lbw and Hunt, largely scoreless after lunch, was run out for a fine and valuable 59 with last man Alan Hunter at the erease. Tauranga had the initiative, which might have been taken from it had the two run outs not occurred, and the 130 required for victory could have taken over 200 minutes. Bay of Plenty opener Pat Whelan and colt B. Webby
Dave Hunt had 43 on the board by tea and they had raised 60 before Webby went lbw to Davey. Taupo tried seven bowlers and, while Cambie would like to forget his performance, they all kept the Tauranga batsmen in check Whelan hit only one four in his unbeaten 54* Webby three in 33, and young left hander M. Farle two in his 34 not out. The pitch had lost its fire and the batsmen, with time on their side, were content to wait for the loose deliveries off which to score. Davey and Govind in particular, befct the bat numerous times with their spin; Hunter was always on line; Hunt gave nothing away; Darlington was impressive in the two
overs he served up; and West was both lively and accurate. Taupo scored 129 off 46 overs Tauranga 130 off 36. Scoreboard: TAUPO T. Cuilen, b L. D. Andersen 9 J. Darlington, c Budd, b L. D.
