Commemorating One Ton Cup

The first contest in New Zealand for the One Ton Yachting Cup will be commemorated by the release of a set of two stamps on March 3. New Zealand's Rainbow II won the last challenge at Heligoland in 1969. k The new One Ton Cup contest was held for the first time in 1965. The original One Ton Cup Trophy was presented in 1898 by the Cercle de la Voile de Paris and during the first half of the century was competed for mainly by International six-metre boats. With the demise of the sixmetre boats, Cup challenges died away but were revived for ocean racers at the suggestion of French yachtsman Jean Peytel. The first challenge of the new series was won in 1965 by Diana III (Denmark), followed by Tina (U.S.A.) in 1966 and Germany's Optimist in 1967 and 1968.

The New Zealand Post Office is issuing special eight cent and five cent stamps to mark the first challenge in New Zealand waters. The eight cent stamp was designed by Geoff Fuller of Havelock North. It has a blue background and depicts the One

Ton Cup against the lines of a yacht. The five cent stamp. with predominant colours of blue and orange, was designed by James Berry, O.B.E., of Wellington. It j features a yacht sailing on the Waitemata Harbour.
