14 CAVALRYMEN DIED IN AMBUSH AT OPEPE
Bush scene
The scene of an ambush by the Maori fighter Te Kooti on a small detachment of a cavalry force more than a century ago, is well preserved in a small bush clearing about 250 yards from the Taupo-Napier highway at Opepe, nine miles east of Taupo. Fourteen members of the cavalry were camped in the clearing on June 7, 1869, when they were surprised by an advance p.arty of Te Kooti's force. The natives attacked from the surrounding bush, killing nine of the British whose bodies now rest in the cemetery in the photograph. The troopers were members of the Tauranga and Bay of Plenty Cavalry. The grave site is easily accessible on foot through a picturesque bush walk (other picture) and is well worth visiting.
