Walking for YMCA funds
Some people walk for fun, others for exercise, some for sport but most through necessity.
Yet yesterday 100 people set out from Taupo on a sixday trek to Napier. And while
the 100-mile jaunt could be class'ed in all the above categories the aim of the walk is to raise funds — $100,000 in round figures — for the Napier YMCA building programme. Each of the walkers, many of them notable personalities and sportsmen, are sponsored for $1000. They will have to average 20 miles a day to finish, and finish they must if their sponsors are to pay out. Mr R. Pettigrew owner of Bettigrew Freightways, Kelvin Tremain, Ian MacRae and Neil Thimbleby were among the departures yesterday morning. Last night s stop-over was at the Rangitaiki Hdtel where they slept in tents. Today's route was of about 18 miles and tomorrow they are scheduled to cover 1 7 miles. Mineral waters specially transported from Rotorua to each overnight camp will provide a means of relieving tired and aching limbs The walk is scheduled to finish at Napier airport on Saturday evening.
