Burn-off

»j A large burn-off of crushed scrub in the Opepe area, about nine miles from Taupo on the Napier road, has provided a spectacular sight for Taupo residents during the past two days. A red glow can be clearly seen in the sky above the hills to the east of the town. The burn-off is being controlled by members of the N.Z. Forest Service and Fletcher Timber Company. After burning off the 2000 acres involved the area will be cleared and planted into a new forest during the coming winter months. The new forest will belong to Fletchers and will be a continuation of its Tauhara forest.
