VISIBLE TRADE BALANCE
With a big surplus of fifty-six million pounds in December, Britahrs visible trade balance moved into a final surplus for last year as a whole — the first time since 1956 that she has shown a profit under both the "visible" and ' invisible" headings in her current balance of payments account. Seasonally adjusted, exports last month shot up to 759 million pounds, benefiting to a greater extent than imports from further making good of arrears caused by last July's dock strike. Imports fell back sharply from November s high figure to a total of 788 million pounds, due partly to a drop in fuel imports from the erratically high level of the previous month. Adding the December result to those given in other monthly returns since the middle of last year makes it • appear that Britain achieved a trading surplus of rather less than one million pounds a month between July and December, whereas in the first half of the year it was close to balance.
