REWA 114, COLLEGE JUMPS INTO THIRD

COLLEGE JUMPED INTO THIRD POSITION, ONE POINT BEHIND SECOND PLACED TAUPO AND 10 BEHIND THE LEADER, WANDERERS, IN THE TAUPO CLUB CRIC KET PREMIERSHIP THROUGH A CONVINCING AND MERITORIOUS FIRST INNINGS VICTORY OVER TAUPO ON SATURDAY. College Old Boys trails the field despite its first innings win over Wanderers; but a more adventurous declaration m view of Wanderers' weak batting line-up could have meant outright success and a greater points total.

Highlight of the weekend's cricket was the century, which included 10 fours and a six, compiled by College captain Fred Rewa. With three of the middle order batsmen getting 20 or better College was able to declare with 253 runs on the board, and the bowlers carried College to victory by 120 runs. Wanderers ,short of players and minus several top liners, trailed College Old Boys by 71 runs on the first innings and wanted 178 to win outright in 78 minutes. But time was on its side and College Old Boys frittered away a grand opportunity for maximum points.

partnership of 56 and together hit eight fours. Nathoo remained unbeaten on 39 when Darlington closed at 106 for three. Unka scored 29 and Dennis Sharrock 19 (four fours). Wanderers had no chance of getting the required 178 in 78 minutes and, while College Old Boys picked up three wickets, Hunt stood firm and a possible outright victory was wasted. Billy Gardner put on 37 for the fifth wicket. Gardner hit 20, Brett Williamson 27 and Rewa carried on to 114 (10 fours, two sixes) before leaving the crease. Taupo concentrated its attack largely on medium pace and this met with consistent punishment from the

College batsmen. Vivian collected four wickets, Alan Hunter three and slow leftarmer Roger Simons two. Vivian, after an unchanged spell at the bowling crease, fell to a tired shot with the Taupo total 25 and skipper May was comprehensively bowled by Russell Williamson at the same score. Stewart Williamson got started and hit five fours and a six in his 33 before his son, Russell, spreadeagled his stumps. Terry Cullen and Hunter got into double figures and Ron Howe reached 24. But the College bowlers were always on top and after 26 overs Taupo had tumbled to defeat by a wide margin. Grant Halverson and Gardner had the most success but Lindup and Russell William-

son got their share of wickets and the attack in general produced a good line and length. College took maximum bowling points and one for batting. Scoreboard: COLLEGE G.
