INSTITUTE HEAD RETIRES

Dr G. M. Richardson, Research Officer to the National Health Institute, retired recently. Born in Wanganui, Dr Richardson attended Wanganui Technical College before going to Victoria University where he graduated M.Sc. with first-class honours. He went to London in 1929 and gained his Doctorate of Philosophy, working mainly on physical chemistry. He was Beit Scholar from 1930-32 and then Leverhulme Research Fellow for the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research. In 1937 Dr Richardson became Serologist to the Ministry of Health, working on the production and storage of reagents for the complement fixation reaction, a basic technique in various types of infection. Returning to New Zealand, in 1947 he was appointed Vines Research Fellow to the Department of Nutrition at Otago University, and he held this position until he joined the National Health Institute. Miss Judith M. Gray, M.Sc. (Hons in Biochemistry), formerly employed by the Food Chemistry Division of the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research succeeds Dr Richardson as Research Officer to the National Health Institute. Dr Richardson intends to spend his retirement in the Northland area.
