Less bread, more meat
Average consumption of bread is down by 131b in the USSR, compared with 1965. And average consumption of meat has increased by a similar amount. The significant figures underline the successful growth in output of foodstuffs and consumer goods in recent years. In the last five years, retail trade has risen by more than a fifth, and goods turnover increased by nearly two-fifths. Capital investment has been greatly enlarged. 1 There are now 5.5 million workers engaged in retail trade. Consumption of eggs, milk and dairy produce is up by more than a fifth compared with 1965. Fish saies are up by a quarter and sugar by 13 per cent. The food has improved in quality also. In the five years wages have gone up, while prices remained stable. The share of manufactured goods in retail trade has risen by 45 per cent. This is always a significant pointer to rising living standards. Saies of Tv sets, washing machines and fridges are all * up.
