Crack left hander Bob Charles (pictured in classical action) toured the Taupo Golf Club's course in 65, six under par, in an exhibition match with New Zealand's other ranking professional, John Lister, last Sunday. Charles carded eight birdies, five of them on the back nine, and only a pine tree stood between him and a possible 64. The tree got in the way of Charles' second shot on the 18th when another birdie seemed on. The exhibition attracted a gallery of over 1000 and many of them thought the round by Charles constituted a course record. But various factors, among them the playing of one temporary hole and one temporary green, ruled out any record. Overnight rain took the sting out of the course and the greens were in spiendid order. More about the exhibition. Page 12.
