Potential fire risk
The Director-General of Forests, Mr A. L. Poole, has appealed to holidaymakers to be especially careful with fires over the period to the end of February. Already this summer there have been serious outbreaks in Coromandel, Bay of Plenty, Hawke's Bay, Wellington, Nelson, Marlborough and Canterbury. Risks of fire in the open normally increase from now on, reaching a peak in February. The period coincides with that of greatest movement of people into the countryside, which potentially adds to the fire hazard.
Moreover at this time of year rain often has only a very temporary effect in reducing the risk. Mr Poole, who retires on January 29, said that during his 10 years as directorgeneral, public response to Forest Service fire care warnings had been most heartening and had encouraged the service to greatly extend recreational use of State forests. For instance in the Rotorua region last summer forests were closed to visitors for only about four weoks, despite the fact that conditions were the driest for 20 years.
