WANDERERS v COLLEGE

College, 55 for three overnight, started the day by losing its fourth wicket without a fight. Russell Williamson, unbeaten on 28 at stumps the previous week, was unable to resume his innings because of his selection for Bay of Plenty colts. Davey was introduced into the attack immediately and with his first ball had Graeme Lindup caught and it was 56 for five. Gardner and Mark Carlton added 20 for the sixth wicket, when Carlton fell, and Gardner stayed with Halverson until 84 runs were on the board. Davey struck in his third, fourth (two wickets) and fifth overs to complete innings figures of 5-31 and, with Dave Hunt clean bowiing last man in Wayne Little, College was out for 109. Halverson was left high and dry on 16, but he opened the second innings and hit six

fours in a splendid 55 before falling to Davey. An in form Fred Rewa, captain for the day displayed a surprising lack of interest and was bowled by Hunt for one and the only real threat, Halverson and Gardner (who batted down the list) apart, to Wanderers' chances of victory was gone. Halverson and Gardner added 32 for the fourth wicket, and Halverson and J. Simon 20 for the fifth, but the writing was on the wall

and, while Wanderers had to bat again, the result was a formality. Davey was again the destroyer, with 5-37 off 16 overs, Hunt and Mike West, the latter strangely kept till the second change, claiming two wickets each — College only batted 10 men. Kevin Delaney was out for two as Wanderers set out for the 10 runs required for maximum points, but Bob Little hit two boundaries and victory was assured without further loss.
