WANDERERS HAS HANDY LEAD
Destroyer .
Wanderers jumped into a handy lead in the Taupo cricket competition on Saturday by beating College outright by nine wickets. Taupo stayed in the race by gathering substantial batting and bowiing bonus points against College Old Boys, though it had to be content with victory on the first innings. Wanderers has 47 points Taupo 40, College Old Boys 18 and College 16. College Old Boys was out for 98 and had to follow on 110 runs behind Taupo's 208 for four declared. College almost avoided the follow-on against Wanderers, finishing just two runs short of the 1 1 1 it wanted to make Wanderers take third use of the wicket. The guile of Warwick Davey, who claimed five wickets in each of the College innings, left Wanderers needing 10 runs for outright vic-
tory, a target achieved for the loss of one wicket but with plenty of time to spare. College Old Boys, on the other hand, prevented Taupo from taking maximum points with an improved batting display second time up. Highlights of the day's play included: •Davey 's match figures of 10 for 68 against College. •Paul Vivian s 6-15 in College Old Boys' first innings — he took 6-8 off eight overs on the day •Sound batting by Grant Halverson, in particular, and Bill Gardner, for College. •The five catches, one off his own bowiing and four wickets by B. McPherson for Taupo against College Old Boys. •A brace of slick stumpings by Bernie Carlton, not batting well but in good 'keeping form, for Wanderers.
