DISASTER CAN STRIKE AT ANY TIME
By the Editor. Disaster can strike at any time in any place, and in its wake it leaves panic, devastation and misery. The coming holiday season lends itself to all sorts of different disasters, perhaps only problems but one thing is certain : a lot of tragedy and heart break will occur. Already on our roads the toll of dead and injured through accidents, many of them needless, has reached epidemic proportions; and the figures will rise even further before the end of the year. Defensive driving, more in self preservation than in action, is one means of keeping alive. And thoughtful action is another. Look before you leap is among the best known of sayings, but how many people, adult and not so old, do so? Many volunteer organisations are prepared and ready for disasters and their efforts are devoted solely to helping others in time of need. And while accidents and happenings will continue to occur, thought and care by the multitude would eliminate to a large degree the call on their time and equipment. Look before YOU leap!
These photographs illustrate some of the features incorporated into the new Red Cross Disaster Relief vehicles — the one based at the Taupo fire station is, if any thing, even better equipped.
