FIRE RISK

The Forest Service's fire prevention campaign this year introduces brightly coloured vehicle bumper stickers. These aim to attract the attention of travellers and holiday makers particularly, because many will travel through or visit coasts and lakes where vegetation is dry and forested areas where fire risks are especially great. In these places thoughtlessly discarded matches or cigarette butts or other fire sources can cause extensive loss, if not directly then in the cost of firefighting. Camp fires can also present serious fire hazards. Where they are permitted great care must be taken to ensure they are extinguished before the holidaymaker leaves the spot. The Forest Service is grateful for the ready assistance of oil companies, who are distributing the vehicle stickers to service stations where they will be available to motorists during the Christmas holiday period.
