FOOTWAY STUDY

Proposals for a permanent footway for the Control Gates bridge are at present under study by the Taupo Borough engineer, Mr W. K. Kiddle. An article in the Taupo Times on August 11 highlighted the danger to pedestrians on ' the dangerously narrow bridge. Some school children used the existing walkways up to four times a day and were in danger of being hit by fast moving traffic. On Monday night the borough council was told in a letter from the resident engineer, Ministry of Works, Rotorua, Mr J. McTaggart, that a permanent footway was eligible for a basic subsidy of $3 for $4 from the National Roads Board. Proposals for the footway have to be submitted through the District Roads Council and approved both by the National Roads Board and the New Zealand Electricity Department. Council resolved that Mr Kiddle investigate and report on the most satisfactory design for a permanent footway over the control gate bridge. Application is also to be made to Electricity Department for a contribution to-

ward the cost of the construction. It is intended that borough finance for the footway should be included in the 1971-72 estimates.
