Shopping hours
Because of confusion among Taupo retailers as to what hours they may open their premises during the Christmas — New Year period, the retailers' committee of the Taupo Chamber of Commerce sought legal advice with the following result. The Assistant Secretary for Labour Mr Duncan of Wellington, has given his department s opinion concerning shopping hours over the Christmas vacation He said that pursuant to the Public Holidays Act the Boxing Day observance is transferred to Monday, December 28. This leaves Saturday, December 26, as an ordinary Saturday so those retailers with Saturday morning exemptions,or with statutory holiday exemptions may open within the hours prescribed by their permits As Boxing Day is observed on Monday, December 28, only those retailers who have an exemption to open on statutory holidays may do so. Lxactly the same position applies to Saturday, January 2, 1971, and Monday, January 4, 1971.
