BRIGHT LIGHTS

The West Ham United association football stadium at Upton Park, London, is now the best lit ground in Europe. This general view, taken from 120 feet above the stadium, was taken when new floodlights were switched on and used for the first time. The new type of lamp is no bigger than a walnut and is encased in a sealed glass reflector only eight inches in diameter. Called sealed-beam compact source iodine lamps, and built rather like a sealed beam car headlight, each lamp gives off as much light as 150 60-watt domestic bulbs at eight times the efficiency.
