SECOND CENTURY TO DAVE HUNT

Spectacular batting was the order of the day in Taupo club cricket on Saturday. Wanderers captain, Dave Hunt, struck his second successive century against College, and Taupo openers Paul Vivian and Terry Cullen put on 102 for the first wicket against College Old Boys.

In all 546 runs were scored during the day for the loss of only 19 wickets. Taupo and College Old Boys, playing at the Kaimanawa Reserve, returned 281 in even time for six wickets; and Wanderers and College 265 for 13 wickets. The stumps positions were: Taupo 208 for four declared; College Old Boys 73 for two. Wanderers 210; College 55 for three. COLLEGE OLD BOYS v TAUPO Vivian (eight fours and a six) and Cullen (11 fours) gave a weak College Old Boys bowling attack a hiding and paved the way for the declaration after 40 overs. Vivian batted a long time for his 72 but Cullen raced to 69 in 98 minutes, and Stewart Williamson struck 15 in 26 minutes. Gary Smith continued his run of good scores to be unbeaten on 25 (two fours) when the closure was made. Without fast bowler Neville Cambie out of action until the New Year with an ankle injury, the College Old Boys' attack was thin, but the fielding gave little support to those entrusted with the ball and some chances were missed or dropped. Extras, particularly byes, assisted the Taupo cause. Though he offered two catches from innings start to stumps, College Old Boys captain John Darlington remained unbeaten on 45 in a total of 73 for two. His partner, G. Pearse, stayed put and these two hold the key to the result of the game next weekend. Scoreboard: TAUPO (First Innings) P. Vivian, c Surrell, b Nathoo 72 T. Cullen, b Govind 69 S. WANDERERS v COLLEGE Wanderers made a dreadful start against College and two batsmen were back in the pavilion with only six runs on the board. Hunt and Ian Wilson consolidated and when Wilson went it was 70 for three. Hunt and Wilis carried the tally to 103. Ray Williams joined Hunt and together they added 63 runs, of which Williams got 30 (six fours). Dave Trueman and Kevin Delany reached double figures down the list. Hunt was at the wicket about 140 minutes and his century included 18 fours. He went from 97 to 101 with a stroked boundary. Bill Gardner, back in the game after a recent illness, Fred Rewa and Russell Williamson were the most successful College bowlers. College started its innings badly and John Williamson was out, caught at the wicket off Hunt for five, after playing, for him, a particularly bad shot. Brett; Williamson followed at 14 and Rewa, in splendid form lately, was clean bowled by Hunt for one with the total at 15 Gardner continued batting quietly at one end and Russell Williamson, promoted in the order, struck six fours in the closing session to remain not out on 28. College, at 55 for three, has a long fight ahead next weekend if it is to retain its placing on the championship ladder. Scoreboard: WANDERERS (First Innings) B. Carlton, c R.
