SAILING INTO HISTORY
The lone figure of Chay Blyth, who rowed the Atlantic with Captain John Ridgeway in 92 days in 1966, is seen here aboard British Steel, the steel-hulled yacht in which he plans to circumnavigate the world single-handed and non-stop for the first time from east to west. The voyage is being sponsored by the British Steel Corporation as part of its research into corrosion and began from southern England last month. Blyth chose the 59 foot ketch for the 30,000 mile journey because it is believed that only the strength and weight saving of a slender, thin-walled hull of steel can withstand the forces of wind and sea off Cape Horn and in the Roaring Fourties. The journey is likely to take one year. :
