Better Picture
A new "black box" — said to be able to withstand any air crash — will record every word spoken by the pilot during a flight. The aim of the new unit is to supplement instrument recordings obtained from existing flight recorders and so provide a better picture of events that led up to a crash. The extra information provided by the Voice Recorder should speed up crash investigations and reduce the chances of accidents repeating themselves. The recorder, developed by the Marconi Company, operates on an endless loop of tape which lasts thirty minutes before being automatically replaced by another tape. The unit meets all civil and military standards of indestructibility and can be fitted with a radio beacon designed to locate ? it underwater after a sea crash.
