Decimal Stamps
The new low-value British decimal stamps were shown to the press recently and will come into use on Decimalisation Day on February 15 next year. Shown here are the 2M> pence stamp, which is pink, for second class mail, and the 3 pence stamp — bright blue for first class mail in Britain. The other stamps are V2 pence, turquoise; 1 pence, crimson; IV2 pence charcoal grey; 2 pence, green; 3V2 pence, grey green; 4 pence light sepia; 5 pence, pale violet; 6 pence, light green, 7V2 pence, light brown; and 9 pence, orange and black.
The colours of the new stamps were chosen after extensive tests on 25 colours for "confusability" at the Applied Psychology Research Unit in Cambridge, east England. The stamps all show the Machin profile of Queen Elizabeth 11 used in the current low-value range. Within 18 months of February 15, 1971, every British stamp issued since 1911 — except decimal stamps — will be invalid for postage. The One pound Queen Elizabeth 1 1 stamp and the One pound Windsor Castle stamp have been adopted into the decimal range and will continue to be valid.
