TAUPO FINISHED THIRD IN SCHOOLBOY TOURNAMENT

A N.Z. secondary school- | boys' hockey tournament was held in Ashburton during the school holidays. Six teams were entered, including one from Taupo-nui-a-Tia College. Taupo's first game was played against Ashburton II. In this, Taupo beat the host team by 5 goals to 1. Scorers for Taupo were: B. Righton (3), S. Baker and M. Tritt. It was during this game that the Taupo team was introduced to the muddy conditions, which remained the feature of the tournament. i In the afternoon's draw, Taupo beat M^aimea. This i game developed into a very jeven tussle with Taupo just ' managing to scrape through 3 goals to 2. Waimea, who became the runners-up in jthe tournament, only suffered two losses. From Ivlonday's sunny outlook, Tuesday became "black Friday". In the morning match against Heretaunga, ' Taupo was unable to prevent the fine Here-

taunga forwards from scoring. During the early stages both teams were evenly matched, but as play progressed it became evident that Heretaunga held the upper hand. The final score finished at 5 — 0. In the afternoon Taupo met the host team which won with a 4 — 1 score. At half-time the score was 3 — nil to Ashburton. Taupo in the second half gained better control of the ball and imHowever though Taupo held proved in positional play.

a territorial advantage in this spell, only one goal from M. Tritt was scored. The final game on Wednesday morning against Westlake resulted in a very even competition. Taupo drew with Westlake 2-all. With Heretaunga's win against Waimea in a play-off during the afternoon, Taupo finished third in the tournament. From the experience gained at this tournament the Taupo team has acquired a valuable knowledge of

hockey styles and tactics which could prove useful in future games. Above all, everyone enjoyed themselves while in Ashburton. The trip was only made possible by the efforts of Mr N. Pointon, an art teacher at the Taupo College who is manager and coach of the hockey team.
