Rare Bird Sighting
A sighting of a rare species of bird is always of interest to people who study ornithology. A Taupo resident, Mr C. Watson, recently saw what he believed might have been a native crow perched in a pine tree in Ruapehu Street on Tuesday. The bird had the physical characteristics of the crow, according to Mr Watson. He said it was a little bigger than a tui; it was sooty black in colour and it had a long distinctive tail. Mr Watson knows of two colonies of the species in an area between Taupo and Napier and when the bird he was watching was disturbed It flew in this direction. It is Mr Watson's opinion that the species is almost extinct and its numbers diminished when the bush was felled round the Taupo area.
