ORNAMENT MADE FROM
PARASITE
There is a fine specimen of dactalanthus talori in the (iisplay window of James • Travel Agency, Taupo. The specimen is a type of parasite growth which forms ItSelf at the root of a species of tree, found in the Opepe bush area. When dug from the ground the parasite resembles a huge
cauliflower, clay - coloured and rather obnoxious to look at. To attain its final grained wood appearance it is boiled to remove the outer covering and the wood-like centre is given a coat of oil to enhance its texture. The specimen in the agency window was found by the proprietress' father, Mr A. L. H. Stott, about 30 years ago. It is about 15 inches high and the same distance across. The "wooden flower" as the parasite is often called, is believed to exist only in the Southern Hemisphere.
