Queen Carnival Begins

M First Meeting On Thursday Night To Plan Campaign

Taupo Youth Centre's Queen carnival will get under way next week following a meeting in the . Memorial Hall on Thursday night to plan the initial campaign. Within a period of two and a-half months, the centre committee p to raise £8000, closing off the campaign with a coronation ceremong on Saturday, November 27. The carnival will fall into two parts, with the " initial stage a series of quick-fire Queen campaigns involving the promotion of candidates by business . houses, groups and individuals. In the second round, four Queens will compete for top place in the money-raising stakes.

The organiser for the % carnival will be Mr E. T. (Tim) Smith, the man who originally proposed the ^ idea of a youth hall for Taupo some seven years ago. Mr Smith, who is pre^pared to work full-time on the project, has the confidence of the centre committee. He has asked for the ~ co-operation of all residents of the Taupo district in bringing the campaign to a * v§uccessful conclusion. Probably beginning next Monday, the first stage of the carnival will open when groups promote their own V£individual queens with the idea of scoring top honours in one of the four major groups for their candidate so that she can go on to enter the queen contest +proper. • During the two weeks of this early campaign, a

liouse-to-house canvass will be conducted for any goods residents may care to donate and on the flnal Saturday a huge open-air auction will be held. Following this, the four queens will be announced at a ceremony in the Memorial Hall and committees will be formed to support each one. Mr Smith is optimistic about the plan of campaign and feels sure residents will help the promotion. He is using the Information Centre as headquarters at present, but later on during the carnival, it is hoped to have a building in the main shopping ^centre. The whole success of the carnival will depend on how well the initial "minor-quecn" campaign is supported. Mr Smith has emphasised that any-

one can nominate a queen at this stage and support her with fund-raising. He suggests that the staffs of various business-houses — together with the management — sports groups and others, should band together to support a girl, not necessarily a member of their staff. In this way, a good selection of candidates will be available for the final Choice — which will be based on the amount of money raised to support the individuals. ® Members of the public, sports groups, businessmen and service organisations are asked to have representatives at the meeting on Thursday night in the Memorial Hall supper room at 7.30 p.m.
