TAUPO LOSE FIRST

CHALLENGE

Putaruru Correspondent Taupo Rugby team's challenge for the Peace Cup at Putaruru on Saturday produced a scramble wliich made the game the least attractive of the trophy series, although South Waikato won easily enough — .by 25 points to nil. Despite overnight rain, the ground was as dry as a rock and the breeze was brisk.

Early tries by South Waikato settled the fate of the challengers. The visitors had no answer to the individual thrusts of the South Waikato backs and the strong _ surges of the South Waikato forwards. Taupo had scoring opportunlties in the second half, but South Waikato was always able to make a lastsecond save. The Taupo five-eighths Tamepo and C. Williams almost crossed, but were fiattened inches from the line. Balmforth on the left wing was pining for a try and he would have obtained it had not J. Wood pushed him out at the eorner.

The game was barely under way when J. Wood broke and sent the ball on to D. Wood, who hurried through a startled Taupo side for a try. South Waikato 3, Taupo 0. A few minutes later, the South Waikato backs attacked. Centre W. Gage, struck infield and swerving past T. Ruru sent the ball to O'Brien, who ploughed through for a try. Securing in a lineout near the Taupo line, Bremer poised himself for a pass back, changed his mind and twisted through for a try.

Ferguson conv-erted. South Waikato 11, Taupo 0. Just before going off injured, Ferguson kicked a penalty goal from about 35 yards out. South Waikato 14, Taupo 0. R. Stephenson kicked a fine field goal just on halftime. South Waikato 17, Taupo 0. T. Albert tried to flip a revers-e pass, but lost the ball. M. Stephenson O'Brien and I. Spraggon immediately made a breach and Spraggon passed to J. Strang, who skirted the sideline on a long run for a try. South Waikato 20, Taupo 0. The last try came from Dysart and was converted by Watene. South Waikato 25, Taupo 0. The referee was Mr J. Forsyth, of Hamilton.
