Car Club Members Find Gymkhana On Tar Seal Was Hard On Rubber

The Taupo Car Club's gymkhana held on the tar seal in Story Place on Sunday resulted in a win for D. Dawson, of Taupo. The event, which is the first for some time on tar seal, showed a high standard of driving, althongh some of the more exuberant members found that the use of fiery tactics soon resulted in extreme tyre wear. Once again it was . shown that the smaller, higher-pow-ered cars had an advantage in this type of event, which calls for a very small steering lock and sufficient power to get off the line quickly. Seven driving tests were run off, and these included several garaging tests, a cloverleaf and "hoopla." One novel event was a return to medieval days where the knight on his charger was replaced by a driver in his. car, and this driver had to drive along a line of pegs which each had a hoop hanging from the top. The idea was that the driver was given a long screwdriver and had to spear and gather up the hoops as he drove past, turn around the end peg and place all the hoops over another peg hefore stopping. Several drivers became quite proficient at this. The event was popular with both drivers and spectators and showed the increasing amount of interest which is heing displayed in the club by both members and public alike. Results were: D. Dawson (Austin) 32 points lost, J.
