MORE TOURISM
Sir, — We would like to add our sentiments to those of M. G. Foster in the latter part of a letter to your paper on 19/8/65. As frequent visitors, and would - be settlers in Taupo we have also noticed the general lack of regard for the tourist. He is accepted on a take-it-or-leave it basis. Not only Taupo's economy, but that of New Zealand itself, leans heavily on the tourist trade. Therefore, it seems strange that those in authority should tend to block, rather than encourage outsiders who wish to settle in the district, sinking their whole life savings into an enterprise designed to encourage more tourists. This has been our experience. Is Taupo so insular that it prefers to exist without the outsider's money? Is it so prosperous that it can afford to do so? Taupo is an attractive place, with great potential for growth and wealth, but is it a closed book, except to those born and bred within the sight of the beautiful snowclad mountains and blue waters of the lake? — Yours, etc., TWO WELLINGTON MUGS
