METAL EXTRACTION FOR

TONGARIRO

Details of the proposed extraction of metal from the bed of the Tongariro River were approved by the Taupo County Council on Tuesday. They were submitted by the Tongariro Power Development project engineer, Mr A.- W. Gibson. He proposed the metal should be taken in four stages between the Swirl Pool and Jones' Pool. fully planned, Mr Gibson Extraction had been caresaid, to provide, in addition to the metal: • Flood protection and relief. • Improved access for anglers. • Improved stability of that reach of the river. • A certain amount of landscaping to improve the general appearance and utility of the area as a reserve.

l The county engineer, Mr G. B. Burton, said the work would he under taken to the satisfaction of the Waikato Valley Authority and the Internal Affairs Department. While some inconvenience and disturbance of the fishing waters must be anticipated, the improvement to the river channel would more than offset the disadvantages, Mr Burton said. He recommended adoption of the proposals subject to the satisfaction of the W.V.A. and Internal Affairs Department.
