Local Bodies Have To Fight
For What They Get
Mr Story indicated that he had always been "antipolitical" — no matter what party was in power. It seemed necessary to fight governments for everything a local body needed. "I have no confidence in any of them," he added. A deputation of about 60 Taupo citizens, led by Mr J. D. L. Corry, approached Mr Story, inviting him to stand again in the interests of Taupo. Mr Corry told Mr Story that he thought Taupo could not do without him. He was the most outstanding man in town, by quali-
fication and experience, to lead the Taupo Borough Council. He added that it would be no privilege for Mr Story to accept the invitation, but he would confer an honour on the community by doing so. Mr Story said the council had to fight to get the best deal for the town. It .was rather like being a union boss who had to look after the workers before he got his own satisfaction. "We have had to push our ratepayers to get the
amenities required, but things are getting better and Taupo is a much better place to live in," he said. The dust nuisance had been "appalling," but, from now on, rapid progress in eliminating the problem would be made, he added. It was a great honour to himself and Mrs Story that a group of Taupo citizens had asked him to stand as mayor again. Mr Story also paid tribute to the support
he had received from his councillors. "I offer my services once again," he concluded.
