Some details about Turangi housing development were brought to light at a sitting of the No. 3 Transport Licenslng Area Authority (Mr L. H. Atkinson) at Putaruru on Wednesday when F. Willcox (Mr D. Schwarz), of Putaruru, applied for an additional vehicle authority for a transporter. The application was opposed by McLeod Build- ] ers, Ltd. (Taupo), K. A. Johnson (Te Awamutu), ] and O. J. de Vantier (Rotorua), for whom Mr R. H. j Brewster appeared.
Applicant stated that he had purehased a transporter licence from C. J. Trapski, Ltd. Because he had only one transporter vehicle, three houses he had moved during the past month had to be cut in half. This doubled the pilotage given by the Transport Department. He had been offered a contract by P.T.Y. Homes, Ltd., to transport 47 houses from Tauranga and Rotorua to Turangi. Probably there would be more houses. R. Andrews, on behalf of P.T.Y. Homes, Ltd., said that the firm was contracting for 225 houses at Turangi. The 47 houses which Willcox would move were required to be on the site not later than December. This would require moving about three weekly. Mr Brewster: When will the Turangi housing scheme be completed? — We have been told that the houses will total 1,100. Three hundred contracts have been let now, of which we are doing 225. The whole scheme will take two and a half years after the end of this year to complete. Mr Atkinson said that the
application was iustified, and that he did not think that restrictions should be applied. McLeod Bros., Ltd., had the substantial advantage of being domiciled at Taupo in a more central location for cartage to Turangi.
