TAUPO M.P. SUPPORTS FREE TRADE

The proposed free trade agreement with Australia was the topic of a debate in Parliament last week as estimates for the Department of Industries and Commerce and for housing construction were dealt with. Mrs Rona Stevenson, M.P. for Taupo, spoke strongly on the trade agreement. Mr W. A. Fox (Opp. — Miramar) said the Minister of Industries and Commerce, Mr Marshall, in leading the negotiations, should make sure that Australia did not export her unemployment problem to New Zealand. He should also make sure New Zealand's balance of trade was not adversely affected. "I am sorry that the Labour Party are so firmly opposed to the limited free trade agreement with Australia," said Mrs Stevenson. "I am sure the Labour supporters in my electorate who are employees in forestry will be disturbed at the lack of concern for their well-being. For my part I earnestly hope that the deputy Prime Minister has successful negotiations which will lead to trade agreements with Australia, because workers in my electorate are affected, and if the opposition are not interested in this, I am. "This agreement," she went on, "will ensure the future of the working people in the forestry industry in my electorate. Some members of the Opposition have said they have no confidence in the deputy Prime Minister.

"I don't give a pine cone what they think. "Thousands of New Zealanders have not only the greatest confidence in his ability to negotiate on our behalf, but a great pride in the dignified and manly way in which he will carry out his responsibility for New Zealand. "New Zealand Forest Products, in my electorate, alone, employ 2500 people

and export large quantities timber in various forms, timber in various farms, paper from wrapping paper to writing paper, and in their Auckland factory, where they employ a further thousand people, they produce many mere lines. I am concerned that the future of the people engaged in this work is ensured in all ways possible."
