POETRY CONTEST HELD TO

RAISE MONEY

Tauhara school held a poetry contest recently to raise funds ff>r the visit of the Bell Block School. . First place in the competition went to Gregory Armstrong, whose poem follows: — Sunny skies and hot weather, At the lake we all do gather^ Long.days and short nights, Summer's here to our delight. Now the plants begin to flower, Fresh and new is the sunny shower. The air is warm and smells are sweet. Born lambs are learning to bleat. Everyone knows spring is here. Sound, smells, and scenery we know, They belong to our town Taupo. — (Condensed)

Second place with a charming little poem went to Heather Sutherland: — At Christmas time when school breaks up, Where do people go. From North and South and • East and West, They come to fair Taupo. The roads are jammed with traffic, With daravans galore, All heading for the mecca, Of Lake Taupo's sandy shore. The snow-fed streams from the mountains, Give forth a cup of cheer, And from babes to folk of eigbty, They come from far and near. The third place-getter was Mark Bracewell, aged only nine years.
