Complaints Over Standard Of Government Buildings In Mangakino Township
After compiaints had been made regarding the unsightly buildings being erected in the eommercial area of Mangakino by the New Zealand Railways Department to serve as a bus depot, Taupo County Council deeided to send a deputation to the Minister of Railways, Mr McAlpine, to make objections. Cr U. R. MacDonald raised the matter and said he was not happy with what Government departments were doing in Mangakino. Not only the Railways Department, but also the Ministry of Works and the Education Department were going against good building standards. It appeared that Government departments did not feel bound by normal requirements which had been agreed to before the council took over the administration of Mangakino. "Each is going its own merry way to the detriment of Mangakino and it is not doing the town any credit"" Cr MacDonald said.
He added that the bus depot was being built in the town's eommercial area where there were some very good buildings. On the motion of Cr J. M. Black, the council deeided to send a deputation to Mr McAlpine to put the council's case in relation to the bus depot building.
